In 1998, our Department first started the newborn screening tests to detect neonates with hearing impairment
in Korea. From that time until now, over 10,000 newborn babies have received the screening tests, and 13 patients with hearing impairment were detected and followed-up. Our Department wanted to provide the most advanced and systematized hearing rehabilitation program possible for the patients with hearing impairment. So with this in mind, we opened Ajou Hearing Center in 2003.
Our Department also provides regular programs and meetings several times in a year, and gives information about hearing rehabilitation to the patients and their families. Ajou Hearing Rehabilitation Meeting has been held every year since the first meeting was held in May, 2001. The titles were " Not Alone, Any More " (2001), " About Artificial Cochlear " (2002), " Cochlear Implantation " (2003),
and " Cochlear Implant Program in Ajou Hearing Rehabilitation Center" (2004).
Cochlear implantations were started in this Department in 2002. Since that time, about 169 patients have been operated on for cochlear implantations(2010). Cochlear Implant Family Camp was first held on Sept. 20, 2003. We organized this camp in order to provide patients who received cochlear implantations at Ajou Hearing Center and each family with the opportunity to meet each other.
